Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Brinkley, Arkansas and North Little Rock. The day started out cold and rainy, but sunshine broke through late in the day. There were no trains at Brinkley from 9 a.m. until 2:08 p.m. then there were four trains between 2:08 p.m. and 3:04 p.m. Best catch at Brinkley was bright red Canadian Pacific 8549. Two good catches at North Little Rock's UP yards were LRWN Alco 102, now lettered VLIX and UP 4141, the Bush unit, which spent the past week at Jenks Shops, apparently being retouched with paint. Also, a colorful sunrise and a woodpecker.

Included today:
1) UP 3963, 4495, 4702, 4925, 4141
2) Canadian Pacific 8549
3) Four CSX blue boxcars in a row
4) Rock Island hopper at end of train
5) Woodpecker at Dagmar Wildlife Refuge

LEFT-Dark, cold and rainy morning at Brinkley - temperature 43 degrees. RIGHT-Looking south from the depot.

LEFT-Almost missed UP 3963 on the daily UPS-Z train at 2:08 p.m. RIGHT-Another train approaching at 2:23 p.m. from the north. This is the Jonesboro Sub of the UP (former SSW).

LEFT-UP 4495 and CSX something or other at 2:24 p.m. RIGHT-UP 4702 with a mixed at 2:35 p.m.

LEFT-Four matching CSX blue boxcars on the end of the train. RIGHT-It cleared off quickly and another train approaches at 3:04 p.m.

LEFT-UP 4925 and Canadian Pacific 8549 at 3:04 p.m. RIGHT-Rock Island blue hopper.

LEFT-Purple ground flowers next to the tracks at Brinkley. RIGHT-At North Little Rock now. This is Little Rock & Western 102, now labeled as VLIX. Anyone have any idea what its fate is?

UP 4141, 5:46 p.m. in the yards in North Little Rock. This unit has spent the past week at Jenks Shops for, I'm told, patch-up painting.

LEFT-Here's the sunrise I took on my way to Brinkley. RIGHT-Saw this woodpecker at Dagmar-Cache River National Wildlife Refuge, about 10 miles west of Brinkley on February 21, on my way to the Brinkley Depot Museum or the day. This is the area where the Ivory-bill Woodpecker was supposedly sighted in 2004 and a few searchers from Cornell University of New York are still in this area trying to verify the Ivory-bill's existence.
