With
all the rain we've had here in Arkansas (now 13.00 inches above
normal as of July 31, 2009 in Little Rock - the wettest July in 118 years),
this honeydew melon plant has taken root through the ballast next
to the Amtrak siding at Union Station in Little Rock, AR. There are two
melons on this vine. I had originally thought these were small
watermelons, but after several people pointed out that the leaves were
not right for watermelons, I picked one on July 31, the day after I
took these photos, just to see for sure. I cut it open and it's a
honeydew melon. (photos at end of this page).
It was very heavy and very moist. I tasted a small piece and it tasted
just like a sweet honeydew - no signs of diesel or oil or bitterness.
So much for the horticultural lessons!! After all, I do my 'gardening' at Kroger :-)
Photo taken Thursday, July 30, 2009. This track is the Amtrak siding at Union Station.
This
is what the melon looked like on July 23. Definite stripes on the melon.
Taken Friday, July 31, 2009 right before I picked it.
I placed it on the ground under a shade tree at the station before I cut it.
It was heavy and very moist and tasted really sweet (the tiny piece I ate).
