While driving back home from my Saturday volunteering at the Brinkley, AR depot museum, I drove on US Highway 70 through Lonoke, AR and came across these Christmas lights around the former Rock Island depot in Lonoke. The depot is now used as the Chamber of Commerce.

LEFT-An old crossing signal crossbuck was decorated with red lights. The Rock Island's tracks were on the other side of the brick. RIGHT-I'm standing on the right of way looking east. The depot is on the right.

RIGHT-You can see where the Rock's tracks were. I don't know if they are still under the pavement or taken up and filled in with asphalt.

RIGHT-The short section of track to the left is original Rock Island track that was never taken up (this line of the Rock through here - the Sunbelt Line - was abandoned and taken up in the early 1980s). Hazen, AR, about 20 miles to the east, also has some original Rock Island track in it's original location.

LEFT-The ties are still in place, but rotting. RIGHT-Moon and signal.

LEFT-Looking east. RIGHT-Chamber of Commerce sign.

These two cars were donated over 20 years ago. Union Pacific donated the boxcar and caboose.

LEFT-Moon, caboose and fall-color tree.

RIGHT-Sunset along the Rock, circa 2009.
