Three UP officials (the Manager of Operations Procedures, Head of Terminal and Trainmaster) ready to do a Red Flag  test (sometimes called an 'efficiency test') on a northbound train at 12:07 p.m. October 5.  From "Locomotive450" on Youtube: "Efficiency tests, also known as banner tests or stop obstruction tests, are one of the more hated aspects of the job that train crews must endure. The test can be set up multiple ways, but the ultimate result is that the testing officer places a red flag in the gauge of the rails, which the train must stop short of, or the crew faces decertification. The test can be set up by placing a yellow-red flag two miles in advance which, without any paperwork explanation for its placement, is considered an “unforeseen” and crews must be prepared to stop short of a red flag placed two miles farther. The test can also be set up by forcing the train to slow to restricted speed before reaching the flag (either with a lit fusee or the dispatcher deliberately not lining the preceding signal and instead “flagging the train by”) in which case the train must also be prepared to stop short of a red flag. The tests are intended to ensure that crews are paying attention to their duties and following the rules." Again, thanks to "Locomotive 450" on YouTube for this information.

Red flag has been placed, 12:10 p.m.

The northbound train comes around the corner at 12:14 p.m.

12:16 p.m. This particular train had 8 locomotives.

12:17 p.m. Yes, they had boots on. MFWNL-04

12:18 p.m. Two board UP 2162.

This train is on UP Main 1. You can see the headlights reflecting on the train of another northbound, this one on Main 2, at 12:19 p.m.

UP 9572 will pass the stopped train, 12:20 p.m. AARAS-04

Passing.

After the train on Main 2 passes, the inspectors leave the cab, 12:26 p.m.

Comparing notes, 12:27 p.m. I was given permission to take these pictures. I'm sure those of you with UP in North Little Rock will recognize the three officials. The tested train was on its way.
