On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, I caught a rare (for me at least) daytime westbound move by the Little Rock & Western past Union Station in Little Rock, then I drove to the Pulaski (former Rock Island) siding in west Little Rock and caught it switching cars. Also got a unit continuous rail train, which went past the station toward the east, then backed past the station again on the same track going west. Plus a couple of other trains and some old fallen-flag freight cars on the LRWN train., including LRWN 195030 (a Deyr???&Mack??? boxcar - couldn't make out all the letters), and ATW 75030, a Laurinburg And Southern boxcar, blt 2-75.

UP 8577 passing at 2:03 p.m.

SPMW 6679 MW rail hauler.

Unique-looking train for sure.

Here it's going from Main 2 to Main 1. Is there a curve radius too sharp to handle welded rain in a train like this or does the rail bend easily on any curve? Is there a speed restriction on curves hauling this type of rail?

The train backed up and around the curve south of the station at 2:09 p.m.

Little Rock & Western 500 (former Bay Line) moving west at 2:14 p.m.

LRWN 500 and 2017.

LRWN 2017, former Meridian & Bigbee.

LRWN 195030, Deyr???&Mack??? boxcar, built 11-79.

LRWN 195083 boxcar.

BN 449246 green hopper.

ATW 8267 blue boxcar.

This was a very long train. Here it is looking east.

Looking west. Bet drivers in west Little Rock at LRWN's road crossings wondered if the train would ever end. These cars will be switched at the Pulaski siding in west Little Rock onto several different tracks. I drove there to get some pictures.

ALM 1624 boxcar, looks like an East Camden & Highland car.

NOKL 729189 BC Rail car.

ATSF 68221 gondola, blt 10-66 (at least I think it was 66....it was faded).

The end of the train.

A BNSF-led train approaches as the LRWN train exits at 2:20 p.m.

BNSF 4594, 2:22 p.m.

Heading out to the Pulaski siding, I got this red-green tree with the Amtrak direction sign on Markham Street.

Now I'm at the Pulaski (former Rock Island) siding off Rebsamen Road in west Little Rock, only a couple of miles from Union Station. The BNSF local also uses this siding. The man in the yellow blazer is one of two LRWN workers directing the switching. He will manually switch the tracks as the train pushes and picks up several freight cars then moves forward then backs again several times.  As soon as the train picks up a cut of cars and passes the siding, he changes the switch to route it to another track and it immediately backs up again to place and pick up other cars. The train barely stopped after passing the switch before it started backing up again, maybe 2 or 3 seconds. Very efficient.

Another man waits for the cars to be delivered.

It's now 2:39 p.m.

A walking/biking trail runs close to the tracks.
