Here's a few trains at Bald Knob, Arkansas, where UP's Hoxie Sub (from Poplar Bluff to North Little Rock) meets UP's Memphis Sub (from Bald Knob to Memphis). These were taken Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9, 2010. On May 8, Bald Knob had it annual Strawberry Homefest (in the early part of the 20th century, there used to be unit trains of strawberries shipped from Bald Knob every year). LEFT-UP 3826, 1:11 p.m. May 8, 2010, northbound on the Hoxie Sub of the UP. RIGHT-UP 4875, 1:56 p.m. May 8.


LEFT-NS 9083 coming off the Memphis Sub. The train will switch to the Hoxie Sub just south of here heading south to Little Rock. It's 3:11 p.m. May 8. The first track you see is UP Main 1 on the Hoxie Sub, the second is Main 2 and the third track is the Memphis Sub. Amtrak's Texas Eagles use Main 1 every night, and sometimes the Eagles pass at this location at 1 or 2 a.m. RIGHT-The Bald Knob depot has been renovated and is now a hobby shop with lots of model trains. LEFT-UP 355268, an old UP boxcar. RIGHT-A load of poles.


LEFT-Northbound UP 2053 passes at 3:39 p.m. May 8. RIGHT-Notice the old signal bridge and the round signal. UP has been replacing these along the Hoxie sub, but I heard they may leave these at Bald Knob. Anyone know for sure?


LEFT-UP 1995 heads UP's Engineering Special, which runs every year across the UP system to do a rolling inspection of their tracks. Every year, UP Engineering Dept. officials from Omaha headquarters will travel via passenger special throughout the UP system to inspect the railroad physical plant. LEFT-UP 8535, 3:52 p.m. May 9, Sunday. RIGHT-Going under another signal bridge.

A train is heading west then south from the Memphis Sub at 4:48 p.m. May 9.


LEFT-I was using my Netbook computer inside one of the cabooses. I bet this is the first time a laptop computer was used in this caboose (MP 13675). RIGHT-UP 5829, UP/SP 6231, UP 7131.


RIGHT-This was a coal train weith GLFX markings.


UP 1982 and 1996 head an Operation Lifesaver train southbound at 5:25 p.m. May 9.

LEFT-The depot/hobby shop has these nice benches on the north side of the station. RIGHT-This parade float won first place in the annual Strawberry Homefest celebration. It was for the local Boy Scouts.


LEFT-Also a bench on the east side. RIGHT-Looking south from the bay windows.


LEFT-Looking north. RIGHT-Inside the hobby shop in the depot. It has tons of model trains, all scales, and a great operating layout.  UP's tracks are to the right.


1984 wooden RPO/Coach built for the Missouri & North Arkansas (the last wooden coach built for them). They are planning restoration.


Bald Knob's City Hall and Police station.  Population in July 2008: 3,420. Estimated median house or condo value in 2008: $66,808 (it was $44,700 in 2000). (Bald Knob: $66,808 - Arkansas:  $105,700).
