Saturday,
July 18, 2009 at Brinkley, Arkansas on UP's Jonesboro and Brinkley Subs
in eastern Arkansas. Nice, sunny and cool day (record low of 61 this
morning at Little Rock). Seven trains today between noon and 4 p.m.,
including:
1) UP 4042, 5518, 4719, 2001 (in North Little Rock) 2) NS 2689, 9399 3) CSX 8364, 7753 4) Little Rock streetcar 411
LEFT-Brinkley Depot Museum and pink Crape Myrtle. This museum is run by volunteers of the Central Delta Historical Society (cddm.org) RIGHT-Love the macro setting on my Panasonic Lumix FZ28 camera.
LEFT-UP
4042 heading the UPS expedited at 11:57 a.m. The Jonesboro Sub (former
Cotton Belt) runs due north-south past the depot, and lighting on both
sides of the track is bad at mid-day unless I stood in the front of the
train and shot head-on. Since I don't want to smush the camera, I stay
to the side. RIGHT-A Geranium flower in front of the depot.
LEFT-NS 2689, 12:40 p.m. RIGHT-Small pipes.
LEFT-CSX
8364, 1:21 p.m. RIGHT-Lush green since we've been having so much rain
lately (over 9 inches above normal for the year so far)
LEFT-Beautiful blue skies and puffy clouds. About 78 degrees, not bad for mid July. RIGHT-CSX 7753, 1:56 p.m.
LEFT-UP
5581, 2:16 p.m. This was a very short auto-rack train (maybe 8 cars, I
didn't count) RIGHT=Killdeer bird sitting on his nest of eggs. Yes,
some of these birds lay their eggs in ballast, I assume for camouflage.
LEFT-UP 4719, 3:29 a.m. RIGHT-NS 9399, 3:49 p.m.
LEFT-Round, short pipes. RIGHT-UP 2001, the 2001 Olympic Torch Relay locomotive in North Little Rock at 5:52 p.m.
Central
Arkansas Transit's Streetcar 411 heading north toward North Little Rock
from the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce stop about 6 p.m. Saturdays
and Sunday have the most riders. Website for the transit agency is CAT.org.
You can view the streetcar's route map and schedule on this site. John
C. Jones and I (both Arkansas Railroad Club members) have pictures in
CAT's 2009 calendar.
